At last an end to the difficulties that you may have had in the past finding suitable accommodation and the chance to book your holiday in hotels where you don't have to worry about explaining your gluten free diet. All the hotels shown in this section are all quite familiar with celiac requirements and have assured us that they will do everything possible to make your holiday an enjoyable one. The resorts listed are a mix of hotels offering bed & breakfast or half board and also some self catering apartments. Wherever possible, with the self catering we will give you names and addresses of shops selling gluten free products. All you need now is the time to take that holiday!

Villa Canneto by La Paul
Lake Garda - Sirmione
Villa Canneto is the latest addition and under the same management as Hotel La Paul and Hotel Smeraldo. A completely refurbished villa with 9 mini apartments next to Hotel Smeraldo and overlooking the lake on the eastern shore of the Sirmione peninsular. Directly in front of the building is a private garden with sun loungers and umbrellas facing the lake. The villa and apartments are fully automated with a key code to enter into the private car park and a similar code to enter the apartments allowing for the Villa to remain open all year even when Hotel La Paul and Smeraldo are closed.
The 9 studio apartments are divided into Panorama for max 3-4 persons - front facing to the lake and on both ground and first floor with full lake view and either balcony or terrace, Classic for 2 persons on first floor and a side view to the lake from the balcony and finally Standard for max 3 persons on the ground floor with a partial lake view from the terrace. All the apartments have air conditioning / heating, wifi, wall safe, TV with satellite channels and modern furnishings with a double bed (which can also be made up as twin beds), a mini kitchen with 2 induction rings, sink, fridge, microwave, kettle, a rack for drying clothes and bathroom with shower/wc, plus balcony or terrace with table and chairs. Panorama and Standard also have a sofa bed which becomes a small double suitable for 1 adult or 2 children.

The apartments can be booked either as self catering or with breakfast in La Paul or Smeraldo during the normal hotel season. For those who wish to eat out in the evenings it is an easy walk into Sirmione town centre and the many restaurants or you can try the à la carte menu at Restaurant Il Canneto in Hotel La Paul. The menu can be made gluten free if needed and you can either eat in or ask for a 'take away' and eat in your apartment.
During the period from April to end of October check in for the apartments is in Hotel La Paul also right by the lakeside and opposite Villa Canneto on the western shores of the Sirmione peninsular and just a short distance from the pedestrian only historic centre of Sirmione village with its moat and imposing Castle. During the season when the hotel is open it is possible to enjoy sunbathing on the sun loungers in the garden facing the lake or even just sit in the shade with a book at the kiosk bar (open in high season) and relax and watch the passing boats; there is also an outdoor swimming pool. For those who feel they need to stay 'connected' even when on holiday there is free wi-fi throughout the hotel and even in the garden!
For the more energetic the area around Sirmione is great for cycling as there is a choice of routes both on the flat or taking to the hills. The hotel has some 'city bikes' for free use to cycle locally or you can hire professional mountain or road bikes and take any of the 9 tours available to other lake side villages, or visit castles, medioeval hamlets, vineyards or just cycle the route along the River Mincio south of the lake. Maps are provided by the hotel and on some occasions there are also group guided tours.

This small hotel, right in the main village of Tignale, run by Fulvia and Renato has become a real favourite, well known for its good food and friendly atmosphere. (There has to be a reason why Trip Advisor has classed the hotel as excellent!) All the rooms are en suite many with balcony and lake facing. There is an on site swimming pool, small health club with jacuzzi, sun bed, turkish bath and the possibility of booking massage and various beauty treatments plus a panoramic terrace from where there are views onto the lake below and Monte Baldo opposite. What could be better than 'al fresco' dining in the summer sitting on the terrace admiring the view!
Just a few metres from the hotel are the S. Pietro apartments, 4 x 2 bedroom flats for maximum 4/5 persons all tastefully furnished with living/kitchen area, bathroom, balcony and lake view and possibility of air conditioning. This now brings the number of available apartments within 60 metres of the hotel to 6 that can be booked either self catering or half board with meals in Hotel Gallo. Coeliac guests are given a very warm welcome and will find a separate breakfast buffet and a choice of menu for the evening meal. For several years now to make sure there is no chance of cross contamination all flour, breadcrumbs etc used in the kitchen are gluten free!

Park Hotel ZanZanu
Lake Garda - Tignale
High above Lake Garda with spectacular views onto the lake and Monte Baldo opposite, Park Hotel Zanzanu is south facing giving you sunshine from early morning until late afternoon so there is plenty of time to get that sun tan lying round the pool! The hotel is great for families with plenty of space for children to run around, an indoor pool useful for early and late season, jacuzzi, sauna and gym and outdoor pool including incorporated children's pool, tennis courts, table tennis and play area for small children. The hotel serves a buffet breakfast and 3 course evening meal plus salad bar and at lunchtimes snacks and light meals are available near the pool area. All rooms are en suite and have balcony with side facing or front facing view onto the lake. ALL hotel rooms now have air conditioning. Advise early booking for family rooms!
For several years Park Hotel ZanZanu has also offered apartments, originally for 4 or 6 persons within the hotel grounds by the tennis courts. These can be booked either on a self catering basis or half board taking meals in the hotel. Use of hotel facilities included in the price.
In 2018 they increased the offer adding BORGO BEATRICE - 10 apartments all with air con, 2 bedrooms, living/kitchen area, bathroom, balcony and lake view within the hotel grounds just metres from the main hotel. These apartments are either ground floor - Borgo Giardino with patio and garden- - or first floor - Borgo Terrazzo with large terrace - and again can be booked either on a self catering basis or half board taking meals in the hotel.

From the moment it opened La Dolce Vita Relais had a real 'wow' factor, especially with the stunning views onto the lake from every part of the residence.! This residence adds a new dimension to apartment accommodation in Tignale and is the latest venture for Fulvia, Renato and family already well known for Hotel Gallo and S. Pietro Apartments. Now both buildings of total 14 beautifully furnished apartments are open, all with 2 bedrooms and divided into type 'Alberica' with 1 bathroom and twin washbasins and 'Suite Altea' with 2 bathrooms, one of them ensuite to the main bedroom. This smart new residence is in the same part of Tignale as Hotel ZanZanu and all the apartments have wifi throughout, well equipped kitchens including microwave and dish washer, air conditioning and large furnished balconies and full lake view. On site there is an outdoor (heated beginning and end of season) pool, a room with washing machines and private parking. Bed linen and towels, with a change of towels and tidy round every 4 days and all utilities are included in the weekly price. There is a daily delivery service of fresh bread/croissants, milk etc which can be prebooked and paid at the residence. In low season arrivals and departures can be any day of the week but July, August and part of September where possible weekend arrivals are preferred.
NEWLY OPENED - OTIUM SPA AND WELLNESS CENTRE with jacuzzi, bio sauna, turkish bath, emtional shower, bucket shower with cold water and a relaxation area.
For 2024 use of the Spa is free to all guests at La Dolce Vita but can also be usedand enjoyed by guests from Hotel Gallo for a fee.

Specialising mainly in fish dishes - including wonderful grilled sea fish or 'fritto misto' - Hotel La Paul now offers an à la carte menu at Il Canneto restaurant. The hotel still continues offering half board for guests staying 4 nights or more but you can now also enjoy an evening of al fresco dining on the terrace overlooking the lake choosing from the à la carte menu. Obviously all the dishes can be made gluten free too so enjoy increased flexibility: book half board and then if you are celebrating a special occasion or just want to treat yourselves one evening upgrade to Il Canneto!!

Rooms are all en suite, with air conditioning some facing towards the swimming pool and the Panorama rooms with mini fridge and tea/coffee making facilities have a balcony and lake view. The entrance lobby has been refurbished and now has a much bigger sitting area; the restaurant has been extended with large picture windows facing the lake as has the terrace just outside the restaurant where breakfast can be taken weather permitting. For those of you who need a gluten free diet, over the last 15 years the hotel has specialised in catering for coeliacs so you can rest assured you will be well looked after. There is a separate buffet breakfast area and a choice of menu for the evening meal. Home made bread, cakes, some types of pasta and many other Italian specialities are on offer and when the hotel serves breaded or fried food gluten free flour and breadcrumbs are used for all the hotel guests!

At the northern end of Lake Garda where the lake ends and the spectacular Brenta Dolomites begin lies the town of Riva del Garda. Just a few minutes walk from the old town with its narrow streets and the shores of the lake with its pebble beach is Hotel Villa Nicolli, a 4 star hotel set in its own garden with outdoor swimming pool and a full Spa including Himalayan salt cave, Turkish bath, bio sauna, vitae path and relax area and a heated indoor salt water pool with big picture windows facing onto the garden. You will find the emphasis is on quality, whether it be the furnishings in the public rooms, the lounge has big comfortable armchairs or the bedrooms, many of them recently refurbished and all with balcony or terrace many with views towards the vineyards and mountains. The hotel serves a buffet breakfast each day from 07.00 - 10.00, lunch or a snack is available often served at the pool so there is no problem as to where to go to find something to eat! In the evening dinner with a choice from an à la carte menu, salad bar, dessert and cheese trolley is served in the main restaurant. For several years now the hotel has catered for coeliac guests and is accredited by the Italian Coeliac Society so, rest assured, all coeliacs will be well looked after.

Hotel Eden, 3* situated in Brenzone, just a few kilometres south of Malcesine, is in a fantastic position boasting a wonderful lake view from the hotel terrace, and at the same time only 50 metres from the beach. Guests can choose whether to relax on the terrace or in the garden, swim in the Hotel Eden part indoor /part outdoor heated pool or use the jacuzzi, sauna or even the new gym in amongst the olive trees. If that is not enough you can walk through the tunnel under the road that connects directly with the wonderful Hotel Belfiore garden and the new private garden and beach area with sun loungers belonging to Hotel Eden. The outdoor pool and Jacuzzi at Hotel Belfiore can also be used for a small fee.
The hotel has 37 rooms, all air conditioned with balcony and many with lake view. Hotel Eden is the only hotel on the eastern Veneto side of the lake to be accredited by the Italian Coeliac Society. Coeliac guests are welcome and both breakfast and dinner are served in the Hotel Eden restaurant or during the summer months, weather permitting, on the part covered panoramic terrace. From the main road there is a short walk up an incline and some steps into the hotel reception. However car parking is at the top of the incline near the olive trees.

From the moment you arrive, Belfiore Park Hotel, the only 4*Superior hotel in Brenzone just a short distance south of Malcesine, recently renovated to a very high standard and situated right by the lake side, will make you feel at ease. From every part of the hotel, whether you are on the terrace, lying round the pool, on the beach or on the new sun loungers in some of the more secluded parts of the garden full of olive trees, roses and bougainville, you will have fantastic views onto the lake and the dramatic cliffs opposite with sheer drops to the lake side. Hotel Castello is a 4* hotel situated in the historical centre of Malcesine but at the same time in a quiet position at the foot of the Scaligero Castle which dominates the village. As its full name implies Hotel Castello Lake Front is right by the lakeside and leading on from the garden with its colourful umbrellas and sun loungers, the private beach seems to be a natural continuation of the hotel itself. All the main areas of the hotel such as dining room, bar, lounge and terrace enjoy panoramic views onto the lake so very easy to spend time soaking up the sun on the private beach or the pontoon, swimming in the lake or sipping an aperitivo on the terrace admiring the view. The main entrance to the hotel where you will find reception, bar, lounge and the panoramic terrace is on the 1st floor whereas the dining area leading out to the garden and lake is on the ground floor. There are several room types of 20 sq . or 25 sq.m, all en suite and with air conditioning, some on the ground floor with or without terrace and then others on the first and upper floors all with balcony or terrace and lake views. If you are looking for something special there are also some newly built very 'smart' suites to choose from. The hotel restaurant, renowned for the quality and presentation of its food, serves a buffet breakfast and instead of a set half board menu, guests wishing to eat in the hotel in the evenings can choose daily from the à la carte menu and enjoy a small discount on the list price. There is also a very good choice of wines. Coeliac guests are welcome. Since Malcesine offers several restaurants and pizzerie offering gluten free food this gives you the best of both worlds - choose whether to eat in the hotel or have a couple of nights out strolling round Malcesine and eating at other restaurants!

La Quiete Park Hotel is situated in a quiet position just 50 metres from the lake side near the village of Manerba and just 15kms north of Desenzano. Several years ago the hotel underwent a full refurbishment programme both in the public areas and the bedrooms. The main building is surrounded by a large attractive garden plus the pool area which has both an adult's and separate children's outdoor swimming pool with plenty of sun loungers. The hotel also has two clay tennis courts and city bikes can be hired. During the summer months the 'Garden Grill ' is available for lunch served by the pool. The bedrooms, either in the main building or adjacent villa are all en suite and several have a balcony or patio and view towards the lake. Included in the holiday half board price is an 'Open Bar' from 10.00 to 17.00 serving soft drinks, coffee and tea. In the evening house wine, water and soft drinks are also included with dinner.
Had a great few days at this hotel staying in one of the refurbished rooms in the villa rather than the main hotel. Food and service was superb and although we were never around to have anything from the lunchtime Garden Grill the menu looked good! Hotel Cristina is in a quiet position between the coast and the hills and overlooking the town of Sant'Agnello on the outskirts of Sorrento. The views from the hotel are fantastic and facilities include a lounge/bar, panoramic restaurant where a light lunch is served, en suite bedrooms with balcony and sea view and an open air swimming pool all facing towards the Bay of Naples with Vesuvius in the background. Hotel Cristina, family owned and under the same management as Hotel Centrale in Sorrento, offers bed & breakfast only but a light lunch or snacks are available on days you wish to stay round the pool and since one member of the family is coeliac you can rest assured that all guests needing a gf diet will be well catered for. The hotel minibus does a run the short distance to and from Sorrento town centre several times throughout the day and evening so for those who prefer a holiday in quiet surroundings but still want some time to enjoy the noise and bustle of Sorrento, this hotel is ideal. There are plenty of restaurants in Sorrento and more and more of them serve gluten free dishes so you can take the minibus into town in the evening, enjoy local cuisine in a different restaurant each evening if you like and get the minibus back to the hotel afterwards.

One of the best features is the roof top terrace where you can sit and relax with an aperitif enjoying the view onto the Bay of Naples and towards Vesuvius before walking into Sorrento centre for dinner. All the rooms are en suite and air conditioned and many have a balcony. The holiday offer is B&B only but at lunchtimes snacks or a light lunch are available in the hotel whereas you will find plenty of restaurants in Sorrento, many of them serving gluten free dishes.

Up until now the only hotel I offered on Lake Maggiore was very expensive but hopefully the addition of Hotel Royal will now make a visit to Stresa much more affordable!
Situated at the north end of Stresa and just a few metres from the lakeside you will find Hotel Royal, a 3 star Superior hotel, originally a private villa but was bought and renovated in 1958 by the Rosa family. Originally run by Vittorio, an artist and his wife, over the years the hotel has been passed to other family members who still run the hotel today. During the years several refurbishment programmes have increased the capacity of the hotel but the public areas, sitting rooms and corners in the 'old' part of the building have maintained their character and you will find elegant and at the same time homely furnishings and many of Vittorio Rosa's paintings decorating the walls of the hotel. The bright and airy restaurant where meals are served faces the garden full of flowers and shrubs and in the summer breakfast can be served outside on the terrace. The hotel also has an outdoor pool and Jacuzzi with plenty of sun loungers and a rooftop panoramic terrace on the 5th floor with wonderful views onto the lake and Borromean islands.
All the Standard and Superior bedrooms are ensuite with shower or bath tub and all have balcony. Standard rooms mainly face towards the road and mountains whereas some of the Superior rooms have garden view or side or front lake view.

I have also found a couple of restaurants nearer to the hotel.

Hotel La Palma, facing the lake and the Borromean Islands, is a very elegant 4 star hotel in the town of Stresa on Lake Maggiore situated on the main promenade with its liberty style hotels. The emphasis is on quality from the large comfortable lounge and bar, the beautifully furnished restaurant to the light and airy rooms all with balcony and many with lake view towards the famous Borromean islands. Even if you are not very energetic don't miss out on the health club on the 6th floor for a sauna, steam bath or beauty treatments or where you can work out in the small gym, while admiring the magnificent view of the mountains or the lake! Even more relaxing is the roof top Sky Pool with its sun loungers or the Sky Bar, open daily from midday until late evening weather permitting. All the bedrooms are en suite and have bath with incorporated jacuzzi rather than just shower. Coeliac guests are very welcome.

The excellent menu offer of those restaurants in the area serving gluten free options and non won’t disappoint you and Stefano, owner of the B&B, will be able to point you in the right direction with his list of 26 restaurants serving gf food!

"We have just returned from a fantastic time in Rome - beautiful and there is so much to do. The Guest house was all that I would have expected. It is slightly out of the heart of town and was perfect for us. It had a public transport network that meant you could easily and cheaply get to everywhere you needed to. The guest house was immaculately clean and well presented. It was simple but lacked for nothing. Mini fridge in the room and drinks station in each appartment of 4 rooms. The gluten free was taken very seriously and Stefano was very real and lovely! He was very hands on with his guests and was pretty much available 24/7. There is a 24hr supermarket across the road and 3 gluten free restaurants within walking distance. We also visited 7 of the 20 some establishments that were recommended by Stefano. Venice & Venice Rooms is ideally situated on the first floor of an elegant building in a quiet area of the well known Cannaregio district of Venice but at the same time very close to Rialto Bridge and an approximate 10 mins walk from St. Mark's Square, the Accademia Galleries and other well known landmarks. Although no longer officially classified as bed & breakfast the apartment with its 3 rooms each with private bathroom is far more than just a room rental. During Covid it was not possible to offer a self service breakfast buffet so Monica modified the comunal areas and now offers each room with fridge, kettle and a welcome tray containing tea/coffee, biscuits, muffins etc. Since you will actually be living in what was originally her home there is a fully equipped comunal kitchen available for use should you buy extra food for breakfast or decide to eat a meal in. There is also a room with a wood beamed ceiling which serves as a place to relax, read a book or even watch TV - as you would do in your own house! The garden is available to the guests and there is free Wi-fi throughout the building. The nearest waterbus stops are Rialto, Cà d'oro or Fondamente Nove which, for those arriving at Venice Marco Polo, is one of the Alilaguna airport transfer stops. Monica will supply you with a free city map and give you all the information and tips you need as to what to see and where to go so as to make your stay in Venice a memorable one.
On the ground floor of the same building is the Zen apartment with double bedroom, living room with kitchen plus bathroom, suitable for 2 people who are happy to self cater and available from min 2 night stay to those of you wanting a longer stay and the privacy of eating a snack at 'home' after a tiring day of sightseeing.
'What a gem you have found. Within walking distance of all the main sights and set in an old palazzo to boot. The rooms are very comfortable and our room overlooked a canal - definitely better than overlooking a main road! However the best feature of the hotel MUST be the wonderful terrace that runs the full length of the building with plenty of seating under the vines and views onto Siena with the cathedral against the skyline and where, in the summer months breakfast and also evening meals are served. The other bedrooms are in three different buildings throughout the hotel grounds, all en suite with air conditioning and within 100 metres of the main Villa. There is also an outdoor pool and separate children's pool. Hotel Garden is featured in the Italian coeliac society web site and is very happy to cater for all coeliac visitors.

Portolaconia Residence
Sardinia - Cannigione
Portolaconia Residence is part of the Tanca Manna complex and is situated 30 kilometres north of Olbia on the north east coast of Sardinia between Cannigione and Palau. The whole complex, built in the 80s, is on a hillside facing the sea, with Portolaconia Residence on one of the lower terraces, close to the Piazzetta where, from June to mid September you will find a bar, restaurant, launderette, and also a supermarket (April to October) that sells gluten free products.
The residence is surrounded by green Mediterranean vegetation that in spring becomes one mass of bright yellow mimosa and broom. There are 106 apartments laid out in terraced blocks, each with its own independent entrance, ground floor with a covered patio and garden, or steps up to mezzanine and first floor apartments each with a covered terrace and tables and chairs to be able to enjoy the views to the sea while eating outside. There are several different apartment types ranging from studio apartments for 2 up to larger apartments for 4,5 or 6 persons with a double bedroom and second bedroom with 2 or 3 beds and if needed a sofa bed available in the living room. There are a few steps in all the apartments except the studio. The small kitchens have 4 gas rings, sink, large fridge with small freezer, and on request you can rent a microwave oven for your stay. I have also requested that there be a toaster available to be used for toasting gluten free bread only and should be requested on arrival at reception and returned (without crumbs) before departure. The bathrooms are all with shower/wc and there is free Wifi throughout the units. Due to flight arrival times it may be possible to check in earlier/later than the standard times shown above.
From Portolaconia Residence you can reach the beach in front of the complex on foot in a few minutes. However if you don't want to walk during the hotter summer months you can book the 3 wheeler Ape taxi service and even be picked up/dropped back at your apartment for €1,50 per person each way! For lovers of watersports there is windsurfing, sailing, canoeing, scuba diving and snorkelling. If you prefer other kinds of sports then there’s also tennis, horse riding and golf nearby.
In nearby CANNIGIONE you will find several restaurants that advertise as having gluten free options: The nearest, La Vecchia Lampara is just 1.5 kms, and the others, Da Serafino e Giovanni (pizzas), La Sciumara e La Zattera between 2.5 to 3km. Further away you will find several restaurants in OLBIA, the latest addition being an entirely gluten and dairy free restaurant BE FREE which also has vegetarian and vegan options.

Monte Bondone (Trento)
Fantastic value and great for families. Ski-ing recommended for beginners up to intermediate level. Plenty of summer activities too.
Hotel Montana is situated in the village of Vason at 1650 mts and just a few steps away from the ski slopes (mountain meadows in the summer), lifts and ski school of Monte Bondone. In recent years, the hotel, which has been run for over 40 years by the Barbieri family, underwent a big refurbishment programme and now has a completely new look plus increased capacity. Apart from the normal classic rooms and some apartments, the hotel now boasts 17 family suites on the top floor all with magnificent views towards the ski area or the valley and the Brenta Dolomite peaks. The indoor pool, with a separate children's pool, is open every day both winter and summer and is complete with water jets, bubbles and a jacuzzi and directly outside is a terrace, a real sun trap in the summer! The 'Wellness' centre is certainly worth a visit, whether it is just to spend an hour in one of the relax rooms on the loungers with breathtaking views of the Brenta Dolomites or taking a sauna, Turkish bath or having one of the many beauty treatments or massages that are available. And if you really want to pamper yourselves book the private Spa Suite for a couple of hours - imagine sitting in your private jacuzzi with mountains all around you! Hotel Montana is featured in the Italian Coeliac Society web site and will look after you all very well.

We had a really lovely time at Hotel Montana - the provision of gluten free food was excellent and they totally understand about contamination. The hotel was spotless, the room comfortable and the swimming pool lovely but what really made the holiday was the friendliness and helpfulness of all the staff. The ski area is small, but absolutely perfect for beginners/children and our 5 and 8 year old daughters came on leaps and bounds and loved every minute. I cannot stress enough what a difference it made to my daughter and me knowing that the food was safe and that there was lots of choice. I have also not really visited Italy before, apart from work, and I was struck by the general atmosphere of friendliness, particulary towards the children, which we really appreciated Rob, Katharine & family February 2013
