Lake Maggiore - Stresa
Up until now the only hotel I offered on Lake Maggiore was very expensive but hopefully the addition of Hotel Royal will now make a visit to Stresa much more affordable!
Situated at the north end of Stresa and just a few metres from the lakeside you will find Hotel Royal, a 3 star Superior hotel, originally a private villa but was bought and renovated in 1958 by the Rosa family. Originally run by Vittorio, an artist and his wife, over the years the hotel has been passed to other family members who still run the hotel today. During the years several refurbishment programmes have increased the capacity of the hotel but the public areas, sitting rooms and corners in the 'old' part of the building have maintained their character and you will find elegant and at the same time homely furnishings and many of Vittorio Rosa's paintings decorating the walls of the hotel. The bright and airy restaurant where meals are served faces the garden full of flowers and shrubs and in the summer breakfast can be served outside on the terrace. The hotel also has an outdoor pool and Jacuzzi with plenty of sun loungers and a rooftop panoramic terrace on the 5th floor with wonderful views onto the lake and Borromean islands.
All the Standard and Superior bedrooms are ensuite with shower or bath tub and all have balcony. Standard rooms mainly face towards the road and mountains whereas some of the Superior rooms have garden view or side or front lake view.
For 2023 the hotel will be offering B&B or Half Board. Coeliac guests are very welcome and will be able to enjoy a buffet breakfast and in the evening either eat in the hotel or if on B&B only, take a walk into Stresa town centre where you will have a choice of at least 10 restaurants all serving gluten free dishes. I have also found a couple of restaurants nearer to the hotel.
Lake Maggiore is probably the most famous of the northern Italian lakes, surrounded by majestic mountains to the north and more gentle hills and exotic vegetation to the south. In the midst of this is the town of Stresa with views onto the famous Borromean Islands - Isola Bella closest to the mainland, Isola dei Pescatori which has retained its original charm as a fishing village and Isola Madre with its magnificent gardens.
From the hotel it is an easy walk to the Mottarone cable car station (currently closed) and there is a lakeside walk which will take about 20 minutes from the hotel to Stresa town centre where you will find plenty of shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants where you can eat or just enjoy a drink in the evening. Worth a visit is nearby Villa Pallavicino with its wildlife park, Mottarone with the view towards the Monte Rosa, the 23 metre high statue of San Carlo just north of Arona or take an excursion to Lake Orta or the ski village of Macugnaga. You can also spend a day on the Lake Maggiore Express – boat to Locarno in Switzerland, then special train through the Centovalli and Val Vigezzo mountain area to Domodossola and then return on normal train. If you want a mix of culture and some shopping Milano is just 1hour by train.
For those who are happy to book just B&B and enjoy eating out in local restaurants following are some restaurants in town serving gf food.
La Rosa dei Venti in Corso Italia 50; Lo Stornello in Via Cavour 35; Il Vicoletto in Vicolo del Pocivo 3; in Via Principessa Margherita you will find 3 restaurants, Al Buscion, Lastresa and Taverna del Pappagallo Ristorante e Pizzera; in Via Principe Tomaso another 2 restaurants, Trattoria Due Piccioni and Ristorante Pizzeria Mamma Mia; If you take an excursion to the islands and want a meal out Trattoria Imbarcadero on Isola Pescatori. Just a few minutes walk from the hotel for those that do not want to go into Stresa centre every evening Trattoria San Rocco.
